International Phone service and
internet in Nepal is back on! E-mails are positive about what the King did
from Nepal so far.... Our Nepal contacts are saying things are "better" and
they are "hopeful".
The army is now patrolling Kathmandu rather than the police. The King has
appointed his new government and requested
to talk with the Maoists.
Airlines are now running limited schedule, but the telephone
and internet service still have not be turned back on. The King has arrested
some political leaders and suspended newspapers from just about everything but
publishing his releases. This suppression has not been received well.
Maoists continue to murder
citizens in the rural areas, and kidnap others.
Reports of Sherpas (Everest/K2 Summiters)
kidnapped are on the rise, but hard to confirm.
On a positive note the
three-day bandh called by the
Maoists for Kathmandu had little impact as businesses were open and traffic
King Gyanendra of Nepal sacked
the government and has declared a state of emergency in Nepal. He claims
he is unhappy with the leadership and the continued war with the Maoists and placed many
politicians under house arrest, residents and Indian media said.
Reuters is quoting the King
"I have decided to dissolve the
government because it has failed to make necessary arrangements to hold
elections by April and promote democracy, the sovereignty of the people and
life and property," the king said in an address on state radio.
This is the fourth time the
King has fired the prime minister in the last 3 years. the quest for Nepal is
far from settled...
