SUMMIT! VALERY BABANOV
AND SERGEY KOFANOV WERE ON THE TOP OF JANNU!
|
 |
 |
In delayed reporting: At 9:10 a.m. Valery and Sergey called from 7710 meters,
from the summit of Jannu! Yesterday, 20th of October, at 10 a.m. they started
from 7 400 m, went just right up the head wall and climbed it mainly by the
south side of ridge. To climb faster they left part of equipment and took
minimum: a tent and gas. All the night they were sitting in the tent without
sleeping bag on 7600 meters. On 6 a.m. they started again to climb up to the
top. Soon, at 9:30 a.m., there was a radio contact from the summit with Olga
Babanova in the base camp. They were making photos and were going to go down
by the same way.
In the afternoon the team was in the camp on the Western shoulder. They are
very tired. It is extremely cold and windy. They probably have not a lot of
food, but a tent, gas, sleeping bags. Good luck !
